hi, y’all! 👋🏼 i may be overthinking this but i just so happened to notice my krohniana was feeling a bit soft in almost all her leaves 🧐 she’s due for a water in a few days so i was thinking that might be it but i noticed her soil was still a bit moist (not wet). she’s in molly’s aroid mix, drainage hole, i water her about every 2 weeks when soil is mostly dry, she’s under a grow light, no sign of pests. i decided to give her fresh soil cuz i’m paranoid. her roots were mostly fine, not black or mushy, but there were some roots that pulled off \& were kind of dry. any idea what the deal is? i haven’t watered her new soil yet, should i? i dont want to overwater her but i don’t want to underwater her! 😰

if the outer layer of the roots was soft and peeled away easily, leaving the hair-like inner root behind, that’s what root rot looks like for hoya. i can’t tell for sure by your pictures but it sounds like they were rotting. i wouldn’t recommend a soil mix for hoya since they are epiphytes and require lots of airflow and frequent water for the healthiest root system. most of mine are planted in coco chips and they love it, but any other airy soilless media like a bark/porous stone blend will work too. your aroid mix may be holding on to too much moisture, especially if it’s in a glazed ceramic pot

thank you! good to know that that’s what hoya rot looks like 🤯 i love a coco chip top dress but never used it as a substrate. i’ll give it a try!

i was wondering, do you have to use a specific combo of fertilizer if you use strictly coco chips as a substrate? would a full spectrum nutrient solution work well or do you just use a typical fertilizer you would use with soil? i’m going to repot her tonight.

i don’t use any special fertilizer for plants in coco chunks. for all my plants, i use worm castings, bone meal, and a foliage focused fertilizer with added mycorrhizae (beneficial fungi) for healthy plants depending on their needs. i just started using superthrive for “recovery room” plants and have found the plant vitamins helpful but it can cause mold without enough airflow
