# Since I brought this discounted philodendron ring of fire home from a…

Since I brought this discounted philodendron ring of fire home from a local houseplant shop I’ve had constant issues with it.

I treated it for root rot and switched it to purely being in water so I can keep an eye on it, and have had to trim its rotten roots less and less which is great but it’s got spots of mildew on the stems from being in the water.

I have leca, perlite and moss which I could switch it to as a step up from simply water, but I just don’t know how to get it to recover fully even though it has signs of new growth. Any suggestions and advice would be much appreciated!

I am having similar issues with a few of my philodendrons. I didn’t think they were divas, but maybe they are!

Question for curiosity. What is the mildew, like what does it look like? 😬

I was able to wipe it off because it was thankfully a light dusting, but it was kinda white and spore-y, in the seam of the leaf stem and the base nub of the plant, and a bit on the nub too

Ohhh ok!! I have a lot of plants in water and I do see that often on some of them (not all of them). I thought it was mineral build up to be honest. I usually wipe it off and change the water but it never seems to hurt them because sometimes I go for a LONG time without changing their water and just adding to it 😅😅

They do also grow SUPER slow in water I notice the ones with the big fat roots. My Chinese every green is taking forever but she’s going now have two new leaves and several roots. The ones that have thin roots like Purple Heart and some tradescantias peace lily they grow pretty fast

That’s good to know! I didn’t think that they’d all grow at different rates somehow especially with how quick my monstera rooted in water but that makes sense, I’ll just have to be patient with it! Thank you!

When changing from soil to water it’s common for roots to rot, if they do just keep changing the water it will grow water roots. As mentioned above they do grow very slow so you’ll have to be patient
