# VFT virgin here! 🪰🌱 here we both are sitting outside for enrichment…

VFT virgin here! 🪰🌱 here we both are sitting outside for enrichment time 💚

I bought this cutie little VFT from Canadian Tire a few days ago and repotted it as soon as I came home, making sure the soil has all the goodness Google told me VFT needs.

Understandably it was in a bit of shock between being purchased, the bumpy car ride home, and being handled to be repotted, but most of the traps have opened again after just a couple of days… so I think she’s in good spirits!

Anyone have any tips or tricks? I know to keep the soil wet so I have the lil pot in this candle jar so I can keep the bottom a little wet (will be getting rain water this spring! But for now distilled water), and I currently have her sitting in an almost-south facing window where she gets like 4/5pm sun onward but it’s pretty filtered out by then!

i would recommend giving her lots more light!! these guys need at least 6 hours of direct sun, and the whole center of the traps will turn red when theyre happy with the light theyre getting! also dont be scared to let it sit in more water - just keep it below the halfway point of the pot :)
also - what kind of soil did you use, and are you leaving this guy outside 24/7? if so it will catch the bugs it needs and you dont need to worry about feeding it. i have all of mine outside for now, but might bring them in when it warms up, as it can get a little too hot for them where i live.

I haven’t been leaving it outside because we’re still getting quite a bit of frost overnight but I’ve just moved it to a more south-facing window! I forget exactly what soil I used but it has sphagnum \& peat moss and perlite!

ok - is your soil specifically a carnivorous mix or is it for potted plants? just making sure, as VFTs dont like any nutrients in their soil.
and for future reference, these guys can take the frost!! i left mine outside over winter for dormancy, and temps drop to about 35/37 F overnight - they are native to reigions that get cold like this, and actually need the dormant periods to thrive in the long run!
because you just got this guy, it looks like they didnt overwinter her, which is fine (i would also probably move her indoors at night then to keep her from thinking its the start of winter) I highly recommend checking out sarracennia northwest, they have some great information on their website and youtube channel! they also sell carnivorous plants, which is where i got mine from :)

Honestly I’m not sure lolol I don’t have the bag anymore but I kept the soil it was already in and just added it to the new pot full - I’ll go find some specifically for VFT sometime this week \& make sure to check out that site, thanks so much!!
