# so i got this plant a couple months ago, and for some reason…

_Posted by indigo on 2024-10-06_

so i got this plant a couple months ago, and for some reason everytime new leaves come out the bottom ones become yellow and die off. i got it when it only had about 2 leaves so the “old” leaves aren’t even that old and i just wanna see if anyone knows what the problem could be?

i made sure not to over/underwater it and checked the roots. no root rot at all. it needs water now bc it’s a little droopy but now i’m scared to water it too :(

i’d appreciate any help!

Your friend’s plant looks like a Monstera adansonii, and the yellowing of the leaves could be due to a few factors. Here are some potential issues and suggestions to help revive the plant:

1\. Overwatering/Underwatering: Even if there’s no root rot, this plant prefers consistently moist soil but not soggy. It’s best to water once the top inch of soil is dry. If the leaves are yellowing and dropping from the bottom, underwatering might be a problem. Try watering it and observe the plant for improvement.
2\. Humidity: This plant thrives in higher humidity, so if the air is dry (especially in an air-conditioned room), it might struggle. Consider using a humidity tray or misting the plant to increase moisture in the air.
3\. Light: Yellowing leaves can also indicate that the plant isn’t receiving the right amount of light. Monstera adansonii prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct light can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light can cause yellowing. Try moving it to a location with better indirect sunlight.
4\. Nutrient Deficiency: Lack of nutrients can cause yellowing. If the plant hasn’t been fertilized in a while, try giving it a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength every month during the growing season (spring to summer).

Encourage your friend to check the plant’s environment for these factors and make adjustments as needed. Patience and consistent care are key, and it may take some time for the plant to show signs of improvement!

Yes, it would be beneficial for your friend to prune the yellow leaves. Removing the yellowed or damaged leaves will help the plant focus its energy on new, healthy growth. When pruning, make sure to use clean, sharp scissors or shears to cut the leaves at their base, close to the main stem. This will not only improve the plant’s appearance but also encourage more robust growth.
