It was watering day for my teddy bear vine so I took it down to get a good look. It was a mess inside, tons of brown leaves and pieces just falling off. By the time I was done cleaning it, that pile was three times as big! I cut off the very ends of the salvageable pieces, dipped them in rooting powder and put most of them back into the plant (but also managed to get a little new one out of it). Any idea what causes it to do that? I had it happen once before also and did the same thing and it was good for a while. 🤷‍♀️

It’s been a while since you posted this - but maybe she just needed cleaning up and repotting?

I've repotted it. I've started babies. They all do the same thing. It's definitely one of my challenge plants.

Hey Mumma! I’m just getting into plants but about a month ago I found a gorgeous teddy bear vine (at WalMart of all places!). In researching it, I learned that it’s often confused with its sister, kitten ears, which I actually found 2 weeks later on the clearance rack at BB Barns. They’re both fuzzy (teddy bear is more velvety and droopy with broader leaves that are purple underneath) and have the same care needs, but the plant you have is actually kitten ears (cyanotis somaliensis), not teddy bear vine (cyanotis beddomei). My “rescue” kitten ears looks the same as yours and apparently it’s completely normal 😊 This is what I found:

Natural Aging (Leaf Sheaths): If the stem itself is still firm and green underneath, but looks brown, papery, and dry on the outside, this is likely just the remains of old leaf sheaths. As a Kitten Ears plant grows, its lower, older leaves naturally die off, leaving a papery brown film around the base of the stem. If the upper growth is healthy and the stem isn't shriveled skin-and-bone, this is completely normal.

Here is how to handle them based on your preference:

Leave them alone: In nature, these papery sheaths naturally protect the older stems. If they do not bother you visually, you can safely leave them on the plant.

Remove them for looks: If you prefer a cleaner look, you can gently peel them away. Only remove sheaths that are completely brown, dry, and papery. They should slide off easily with a very gentle tug.

A quick warning: If a sheath feels firmly attached, do not pull it. Tearing it away forcefully can rip the skin of the live stem underneath, creating an open wound that invites infection or causes the stem to snap.

So I think yours is perfectly healthy! I hope you still have it - and the new one 😻

Thank you for all the info. I do still have it. Gave it grittier soil and a brighter window and it's super happy.
