# Question for the experts: I got these two plants about 2 weeks ago,…

Question for the experts:
I got these two plants about 2 weeks ago, the app says they’re Button Ferns.
The sad one went from healthy to looking like this within 2 days. It is in a morning sun location, shade in the afternoon, by an open window. Its buddy (pictured) that I got at the same time was in the same location and still looks good. The pots have a removable drainage hole, so I put them in the sink when I watered them. I believe I’ve only watered them once in the previous two weeks.
Give it to me straight, can this dude come back? What do I need to do to make sure I don’t lose the other one?
Many thanks for your guidance!

I am not an expert especially with ferns. I kill them every time and I've had so many different kinds. Yours on the left looks gone (I'm sorry) but if you see any alive green in there then you could try to doctor it up. Give them lots of humidity. Most ferns love water and humid areas. Don't let it dry out. I'm aware I'm giving you advice with something I never had success with but i believe my problem was the watering part. Good luck. Lots of people can grow ferns.

Your fern looks very unhappy and possibly dead already, but I've had plants make surprising recoveries. Give it water immediately. On average they want water once a week or slightly more often, with less frequent watering during winter. Also get it into shade. Most ferns prefer shade and lower light often helps stressed plants recover. As leaves start to recover or die off, cut off any that you are certain are dead or dying to help the plant save energy for healing the recovering leaves. Also plants do appreciate being talked to, and giving it some kind words of encouragement may help

I would be interested in taking the plant out of the pot and checking its roots and soil. This may help you figure out if it’s salvageable, a water issue or something else.

My button fern suddenly went crispy on me (changed location and didn't update watering appropriately; that's on me) and I put it in a tabletop greenhouse, watered, and misted consistently for 3 days... And it's mostly back! I already brought this one back from almost-dead once, so I was surprised it made such a good recovery, but I definitely encourage you to try with this one. Just don't overwater-- a little water more often is better when they've dried out, so the roots don't get swamped. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice! I would have gone the wrong way but I have a mister, I’ll give it a go!
