# This is Spike and he is a really important plant to me. He was a gift…

This is Spike and he is a really important plant to me. He was a gift from someone who is no longer around. I NEED to keep him healthy. I’m really worried because he’s been doing great for years. Now all of a sudden the leaves are turning white and drying up. I haven’t moved him out of the space he’s always been in. I did repot him about four months ago. Same type of soil, same watering schedule, same everything. Any ideas what I should do? Should I cut off the flower at the top? Could that be draining from the leaves? It’s never done that before though. Help.

You are likely overwatering. It can be easier to keep plants on a watering schedule, but doing so typically leads to poor watering as plant watering needs change with the season/pot size etc. If you repotted into a bigger pot, the old watering schedule is likely too frequent. I would stick my finger in the pot before watering to ensure the soil had dried out. Also to prevent any more yellowing, I’d take it out of its pot to check the roots for any rotting/remove damaged roots, and then repot into fresh soil

I will do that but I don’t water until the soil is totally dry. 🤷‍♀️

Hmmm, what’s the pots drainage like? That’s really the only thing i can think of. Other than too much sun, but if you say it’s always been in that location then that isn’t very likely. It could also be powdery mildew, but it doesn’t really look like it by the photo. Can the white be scraped off?

Clay pot, good drainage, cactus soil and no, the white can’t be scraped off. Im going to take it out of the pot and have a good look and change the soil today. I appreciate all your help. ❤️
