# I’ve recently had a lot of problems with my plants that I have had in…

_Publié par Jon V le 2025-03-16_

I’ve recently had a lot of problems with my plants that I have had in the last year. It’s seems the more I take care of their individual needs, the more problems pop up.
I’ve had this pathos for the better part of a decade and a few years ago. I moved it into the spot where it started thriving very nicely. Just recently a whole bunch of leaves near the base has started, turning yellow and falling off while the ends of the plants are growing like crazy. All the reading done suggests things that I am already doing so I’m not sure what to do at this point. I hate that the base is going to have no leaves at some point.

Have you checked the roots? One of my pothos’ dropped all its leaves when I waited too long to repot it when it was severely rootbound

It’s been years but it’s a pretty big pot.
Wouldn’t it slow down growth at the ends if it was struggling ?
I swear it gets another 3 inches longer every week

Mine didn’t slow until after it dropped the majority of its leaves

Well this is gonna be fun checking the roots LoL.

If you’re able to fix the issue causing the dropped leaves, you can always put keiki paste on the bare nodes to try and stimulate new growth from those points without having to chop and prop. Here’s a picture of one of mine that I did this with

Oh, that’s amazing, I figured it was going to come to that, but I would love to not have to do that. That’s the one thing that always bugged me about pothos, once they’re gone, they don’t come back.

I would repot it. That happens on mine when it's gotten root bound. Yellowing and dropping of older leaves near the base is a big sign of this. Even though new growth is still flourishing

Yeah, it looks like repotting might be in my future.
Not sure how I’m going to get that out of there. It’s not like it’s in a really simple spot to pull down and redo. 😭

That's always the issue with pothos, especially if I've strung up their vines. I've learned to leave a bit of leeway in the vines so I have enough room to maneuver it into a new pot. Best case, you could get a pot 2" bigger, add a bit of media to the bottom, butt it up against the old pot. wiggle the plant out, check the roots out, then put it in the new guy and fill in the sides.

I would check it for root bound conditions considering the size and it hasn’t been repotted in years. Some plants die off at the base first under certain conditions. Pothos is one of them. It’s like the plant gives the youngest and more healthy leaves a chance to take root before the older parts of the plant dies off.

Lighting could be an issue. There may not be enough light to support the rapid growth of the vines. Grow lights may be needed. 🪴🍀

I don’t think light is an issue, I’ve got windows pretty much all the way around, but it definitely could be a root bound issue. 🙈

It needs light. The top of the plant should be getting the most light. So a grow light in that space would likely be very worthwhile.
Trim the vines a couple feet and propagate. I use water. Then plant the propagated vines back into the pot to make it fuller at the top. But it will always lose leaves if it doesn’t have light. Regular trimming helps to prevent leggy vines as well.
