Snake Plant advice? We’ve had this snake plant for a while and we’ve noticed the leaves start to droop as well as a new pup sprouting next to it. The sagging leaves feel pretty soggy. we water it sparingly and it lives next to the bright balcony door.

Do you check to see if the soil is dry before watering? What kinds of soil is it in? Based on what you’re saying, it sounds like it’s overwatered, but I don’t see any yellowing. I’ve also noticed that this kind of snake plant tends to start drooping as it matures. If it isn’t overwatered, I would put a stake in the pot and loosely tie the leaves up.

we do check, but will be more thorough going forward. believe it is in a succulent style potting mix. and we will also loosely tie it up 👍

Hope this helps!

The pot looks too big with too much excess soil for that size plant. Snake plants like a tighter pot with the rim close to the plant. Excess soil means excess water the plant can’t use leaving the water on the roots too long and putting too much water in the leaves causing them to soften. I recommend down sizing to a smaller pot (smaller diameter). Let the soil dry out between watering. 🍀🪴

Snake plants can stay root bound quite a while and still look good. Susan’s advice on repotting is accurate on when to repot.

Wait 2 to 3 weeks to repot a new plant to allow it to acclimate to its new environment. You can violate some nursery’s warranty by repotting too soon.

Repot the next larger diameter pot, typically 1” to 2” wider. That allows room for new roots without excessive water holding soil.

Water deeply and let dry out to water again. Repot your snake plant every three to five years, or when you see roots growing out of the holes in the bottom of the pot. Other signs that your plant needs repotting are water draining out too quickly, roots filling the entire container, or stunted growth and a dull appearance. It maybe pot bound with leaves falling horizontal.

Finally found a snake plant with the same problem as mine! So glad this post is still up. Thanks for the advice!
