# I poured water into my clematis on Thursday and the water still…

_Geplaatst door Empress op 2025-06-21_

I poured water into my clematis on Thursday and the water still hasn’t drained into the soil since I rechecked today. I believe I purchased draining holes pots , I’m really trying to avoid repotting . Can someone please help me?

When water sits at the top like that its due to the soil becoming hydrophobic. This can be due to the soil being too compact and now well-draining enough or lack of drainage holes. I'd lift up the pot to double check. If there are none, depending on the material of the pot you can make holes yourself. However since they're been sat standing water for a day there is the worry of root rot. Repotting, even if its just taking the plant out, replacing the soil and putting them back in the pot would probably help prevent the roots from suffocating.

If the pot is plastic, you can also try ‘massaging’ the plastic sides of the pot to see if that breaks up the soil a bit and let the water drain through. But as Beau said, it still might be a good idea just to tip the plant out of the pot briefly just to check if the roots are still all white etc. Root rot is more painful than repotting!

Use a chopstick to poke holes to aerate the dirt and that should also help the water break through the surface of compacted soil

If you want to get the water out since it’s not draining use ORBEEZ! When I started out I got a plant with soil that took in the water well. Of coarse I accidentally pored way too much water in. Then I found a solution… orbeez! They grow in water (from water) and it worked! It sucked up all the water that didn’t drain or get taken in. I highly recommend using this! It will also save you money!
