# My jade plant is getting what looks like scales..I think it’s because…

_Lagt ut av Emmj\_xo den 2024-04-26_

My jade plant is getting what looks like scales..I think it’s because my plants are stationed near a vent (only place available to have them)..my question is, if the air is too dry can I mist the jade? I know it’s like a succulent so I’m worried about rotting. I don’t know how else to fix the issue! Any recommendations? Also that yellow leaf completely broke off and was very wrinkled. I’ve been sticking to Planta’s care routine instructions and haven’t watered outside of what it tells me. But when I scan it in the app, it says could be lack of drainage (the pot has drainage so that’s not it). Or it says overwatering, but it’s been almost 7 days since the last watering. Any ideas? Only thing I can think is that maybe my my grow light put it in shock and the air dried it out. Idk though. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Succulents actually like being misted, so it won’t be a problem. You could also put a humidifier nearby to keep it damp but not have to mist it.

Since succulents are desert plants, they don’t need humidity, and misting or having a humidifier nearby can cause rot or fungus

Ah ok. I’ve misted my succulents before, but then again they’ve been tiny so that makes sense.

Yes, no misting

I’m trying to figure out what you are concerned about. It looks great in general!❤️ I see the stems looking scaley, but that’s good and normal, Jade does that as it ages like it’s a tree trunk. If it’s the yellow blob in the center, yes, if that was a mushy leaf, that points to too much water. 7 days may be too much still. I’ll go find a description I sent someone else earlier today on how to know when to water Jade.😊

Oh, and what soil? Succulents need well draining soil so regular potting mix holds too much water for them. I checked your profile to see what soil you were using and saw it said regular potting soil. But I also see you have other succulents so I thought you might just have marked it wrong by mistake.

The plant will tell you when it needs water. 😊 Think of the leaves as water balloons full of water. The roots absorb water, the lower leaves fill up, then pass it on to the next leaf, and so on. The plant uses water from the lower leaves first, then the next leaf up, etc. so the lower leaves being full and plump, even shiny, means it’s good on water. It has to use up that water before it can drink up more water from the dirt. The dirt drying out is just to keep the roots healthy. The plant still has water in its leaves to use before it needs to be watered again. The lower leaves should get wrinkly or more pliable before you need to water again. Some succulents are easier to tell than others. Since Jade leaves don’t fold over easily when they are plump, then them being more pliable is a good sign to water. Again, we are looking at the lower older leaves, not the new leaves that are naturally softer. I hope that helps!😊

This! 👆I thought I missed something because the plant looks great, but, I’m no succulent expert.

Thank you so much! That yellow spot in the picture was a very dry wrinkly leaf that broke off when I touched it..it was very dry and crinkly, but the rest seem to look okay. Thank you! I appreciate you commenting 🤗🙏🏻
