# This is Aslan. He’s a ~30 year old jade plant that is a cutting from…

_Publié par Adrian le 2024-05-08_

This is Aslan. He’s a ~30 year old jade plant that is a cutting from my abuela’s giant jade plant. As you can see he is in a tomato can, which lacks drainage. It was originally a temporary pot after my dad accidentally knocked the original pot over and broke it, but Aslan has seemed to quite like the can despite the lack of drainage for a few years now, and grown more than it has in years. I’ve been told by my aunt it seems Aslan is “stretching” and should be repotted or beheaded and propogated, but I’m absolutely terrified to do either as this plant was the last one of my abuela’s she cut for anyone, and she has since passed on. I really don’t wanna kill this one. He’s very dear to me. If anyone can offer any advice on repotting a jade this old, you have no idea how grateful I’d be.

Cool plant, thanks for sharing! 🥰

I understand the fear of be heading. If you like the way it looks, you could skip that and just focus on more light. The stretching would be from the not enough light anyway, not from the lack of drainage. I would be afraid of leaving it in there too much longer so you don’t lose it to root rot. I would suggest you repot it. But don’t worry about the chopping if you like how it looks. Just give it more light. It might grow more leaves and branches along its trunk anyway as it gets more light.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate the advice. I’m planning on taking it to a local nursery who offered to repot it for me. I’ll try moving it somewhere with more light too. I’m just always so skittish about doing anything to Aslan cause he’s really special to my family. We lost my abuela and it was very hard for my family to lose her. She was an absolute pro at gardening and I really wish I could ask her, so thank you for your help.

I love that this plant is a piece of your family and history and you want to do everything you can to keep it going.

To be safe you could always take a small cutting to try and propagate.

Jade can also be propagated from its leaves if you want to be even more careful and not risk any damage.

You can pull a leaf or two off, being careful not to break them. You want to pluck off that full leaf. Let their ends dry completely (callous) for a few days before laying them on some potting mix. Then you can water the soil and don’t water again until it’s totally dry.

Jades are pretty resilient though, so if you did go with a small cutting, chances are it would start branching from where you gave it a trim. Example of where you can prune it. And then you can let that cutting callous and either plant it directly into soil or into a cup of water to let it develop roots.

Thank you for the advice! I appreciate that your suggestion helps cover my bases a little, just in case. An employee at a local nursery was very kind and offered to repot it for me, but I’ll have to consider cutting it JUST in case

You can try both methods so you have some options! I was nervous about pruning my jade plant but read here that honestly you can’t really go wrong. They want to branch. So even if your cutting doesn’t work out, the area you cut will very likely grow two new branches which if they grow out of control you can trim back and keep trying your propagating until you have tons of clones and don’t have to worry as much if anything happens to the mother plant.

Wishing you and your Jade plant and any cuttings a long and happy life together 💚💚💚

Oh that’s really good to know! Thanks so much for all the advice. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. My abuela was quite literally the sweetest woman I’ve ever met and I always smile and think of her when I see Aslan. I miss her very much, so thank you.

I had a very strong connection with my yiayia too! They live on in our hearts, in our dna - whether related or not they change the makeup of ourselves forever.
The plant is a bonus, your abuela would be so proud of how much you care for it but would also not want you to stress if anything were to happen to it either so be gentle on yourself!

Thank you. I’ll try not to stress too much about it. It’s kind of a family heirloom of sorts. She gave a cutting of her original jade to each of her daughters and they’ve either kept the piece for themselves or given it to their children. It’s a fun newer tradition I guess my family’s started. Definitely reccomend doing that for other families too.

Yes, they are very easy to propagate! 😊 Here’s an ogre ear variety of jade I propagated a couple of weeks ago. Took the cutting, let the cut dry (callous) for a few days, then stuck it in dirt in a terracotta pot since they dry out fast. I watered it whenever the dirt was completely dry because moisture tells the new plant it’s safe to grow roots. I’m pretty sure it has roots now because when I gently tug on it, it doesn’t come out.

Oh wow! Thank you! I’m currently trying to propogate a burro’s tail, so hopefully I’ll be getting a few new plants if propogating both plants is successful!

If this helps at all check my oldest out (not 30 years but 15) I have a few jades, all large, alll thriving, one of my biggest is a cutting from my oldest. I have my oldest a MAJOR crop recently and dropped it under a grow light. These need a lot of light to thrive. But take a look at this - I did the major chop about a month ago. These are hardy and prolific. Repot it and chop it and get it some great light. Those are my tips! Good luck!

I grew this from a 4 leaf top cutting from the other one

for more context - here’s like…HALF of what I cut off of it 😅 every single one of those leaves has the potential to become a new plant. As long as you don’t overwater your legacy plant, it will live on. Don’t stress! Good luck!
