# Alocasia zebrina. No pests found on plant. Has definitely NOT been…

_Postat av Grandma2aDancer den 2025-05-25_

Alocasia zebrina. No pests found on plant. Has definitely NOT been overwatered or underwatered. In my bathroom that has a large window that is east facing. It may have received some direct sun in the mornings until 11am-ish. About 8-10 feet from window, but rays do go to the area that it was.
I’m thinking it’s a burn from the sunlight, since I’m pretty sure I’ve eliminated all other factors. I’ve never had this happen before and don’t trust myself yet on the diagnosis.
Hoping I can get confirmation, or if you don’t think that’s the cause, of what you think are possibilities.
Thank you for any help in identifying what caused this.

My 2c: this looks like root rot due to overwatering. Take the plant out of the pot, take off any mushy roots and as much soil as possible, hose off the roots.

Repot in fresh soil, see how it does!

I received the plant 11 days ago and repotted it. At that time it was dry and I, of course, watered it. I used fast draining soil when I repotted it. It has not been watered since. I noticed the leaf when I was going to water it today. It was quite dry when I checked it today.

I don’t think it’s burn if it’s as far from the window as you say, I would almost say that it needs to be closer to the window as sunlight reduces dramatically after even 2-3ft from the window. It could be nutrient deficiency, maybe try a fertilizer. I use a liquid one every so often when I water, maybe every 2-4 weeks-ish.

Hmm…. I know it sounds far, but it is very, very bright and actually when I’ve stood in that area I could still feel the warmth of the sun🤷‍♀️. It has older windows that I doubt have any UV protection in them. The plant came from a reputable seller that does fertilize and I used a diluted solution of fertilizer 11 days ago when I repotted. I fertilize with a diluted solution every watering.

Looks overwatered to me as well and not sunburn. I’ve owned one that is now a graveyard plant. It had similar symptoms.

Sunburn won’t typical start at the edges then yellow. It turns black or white, then, dries out in patches where direct sunlight hits the plant.

It could be fungal or bacterial infection. Both infections typically starts with overwatering and root rot.

Repotting shortly after purchase can stress some plants while it’s acclimating to the new environment. Also, roots are damaged and broken during a repot especially if all the soil is replaced.

Alocasias are soooo finicky! Honestly, I would probably attribute this to shock if you’ve had no noticeable pest or root problems. Also, alocasias tend to go into a HARD dormancy period in the winter. Mine just put out her first new leaf since dropping them all last year. This one being in a new place and probably at the tail end of their dormancy period is just stressed. Don’t give up on them, dote on them!

That looks like fungal. Scorching will not be yellow like that. Just light brown to white

Don’t water with tap water. Use rain or filtered.
Do not let heat or AC blow on it. Indirect bright light.
High humidity.
Do not water on a schedule. Check for soil dryness with a skewer or by feel of how heavy the pot is.
Good air circulation.

Thank you!
I use a water conditioner in all the tap water I use on plants. Would that work well?

I already do all of the other things
