# I honestly can’t tell if I’ve over or underwatered this snake plant!…

I honestly can’t tell if I’ve over or underwatered this snake plant!

The leaves have gone kind of shriveled/creased and it’s begun to lean over. BUT there’s also a lot of new growth starting at the base. But when I wiggled one stem it came right out in my hand and there were almost no roots. I know they don’t root deeply but this didn’t seem like a good sign.

The top layer is the pot is always dry, and when I use a water meter it reads dry, but when I’m pulled out the plastic inner pot, it was very wet at the bottom. But that’s like 6” away from the depth of the roots.

Help?? Thank you!

My snake plant is doing the same thing. I’ve been researching that they really like to be left alone. I tied the leaves together to try to inspire strength lol and it does have new growth at the base.

I wish you luck, and let me know if you figure it out and I’ll do the same!

Also- have you been draining the pot after you water?

A couple things I would do: put it closer to your window, so it gets more light. Put it on a saucer instead of that red pot that you have it in because there’s not much room left in that thing for excess water. Or get a larger decorative pot than that one. And definitely water it less. To someone else’s point above, a snake plant should be bone dry before you water it again. I use a water meter as well for mine, but I push it all the way down to make sure it gets to the bottom of the pot so I can see if all the soil is dry. If I suspect that it’s even slightly moist, I wait another 3 to 4 days and then check again. Also, maybe wipe down the leaves with a wet paper towel to make sure they’re not dusty and are able to absorb sunlight. Good luck!

Thank you all for your advice! I am planning to repot it in terracotta with drainage holes/saucer so I can monitor the dampness better. I’m guessing I’ve overwatered.
