I think you should definitely check the roots see if they’re rotted

pic of roots for reference

Looks like it could be corking

Hi there, it’s a bit tricky to tell from the photos but it looks to me like the root system is too small for the size of the pot the plant was in. I would repot into a pot that provides about an inch (or just over) of space all around the root ball. Use a chunky aroid mix for the substrate which contains perlite (coarse perlite is great but the normal perlite is fine too). If your pal can’t get their hands on ingredients for an aroid mix or can’t purchase a pre-made one, I would suggest just mixing good potting soil with perlite (3 parts soil to 1 part perlite is a good ratio). Really suggest not skipping the perlite, it’s such a brilliant aerator and will help prevent cloggy soggy soil and avoid root rot.

If any of the roots you have there a mushy or squishy or smelly or black (once you’ve washed off the soil), this indicates root rot so I would cut off the rotten bits with clean snips before repotting. If there was indeed root rot you want to avoid reusing the soil and pot. The bacteria that causes the rot will be hanging around in there.

You’re a good friend! 🌿🌿
