# Hello Everyone! I have a problem with the baby leaves going black on…

_Posted by Shay on 2024-07-21_

Hello Everyone! I have a problem with the baby leaves going black on my monstera, and I have no idea what is causing this.

I had to leave my plants in the care of another for over a month. So, I knew that my plants would probably go through some issues (my friend did her best, and I’m so grateful she made time to take care of my plant babies). During this time, these baby leaves started going black and curling up on the edges. The big leaves are still growing big and strong with no issues. She watered according to my schedule and everything, so I am at a loss as I have never seen this before.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Maybe check the roots for rot?

I am willing to bet you got some root rot somewhere… your substrate looks saturated

iiiiit’s root rot — get it out of that pot, into something smaller and a chunkier substrate. these roots need oxygen. cut away anything black and mushy in the root system

maybe i’m losing my mind but are there little white bugs on the leaf? or is that just dust i’m seeing?

i see them too now you pointed it out — still definitely being overwatered, but might also have a bug problem ☠️

I have to agree with everyone else. Black leaves typically mean root rot

I agree with Destinie about root rot and black leaves but I didn’t see any bugs.

You stated “She watered according to my schedule…” is probably the contributing factor to overwatering. Water only when it needs water to avoid overwatering and root rot. 🍀🪴
