# anyone have recommendations for particularly stubborn thrips? I’ve…

_Gepostet von fireside am 2024-03-05_

anyone have recommendations for particularly stubborn thrips? I’ve been rinsing and wiping down the leaves and stems with a little bit of dish soap. unfortunately, I’m now finding a majority of the thrips at the base my newest leaf (2-3 little ones can be found on a couple nearby leaves). I’m reluctant to use a pesticide or release beneficial bugs. I’m reaching a point where I’m wondering if I should just cut off all affected leaves.

I’m also finding these brown bases on nearby leaves. not sure if I should be concerned. this is a monstera plant by the way.

In my experience, I've only had luck with chopping off all the affected leaves and treating the whole plant with a plant-derived insecticide called pyrethrin. Make sure to keep it far away from all other plants

Look into Systemic Granules. I saw results in a few days

do you cut off the affected leaves and stems or leave them?

I only cut a few… the ones that were really bad. I continued to shower/clean my plant every few days and spray down with neem oil. They started decreasing but because they reproduce so fast I never was able to get rid of them all together until using the systemic granules. It is an internal pesticide that will kill the thrips next time they try to suck the plants sap. Now that it’s under control I just use the granules every 5-6 months for preventative measures. It’s been over a year and haven’t seen anymore thrips

Thank you!!!

Thrips will be in the soil too so systemic treatment is kind of the only option

oh yikes I didn’t realise that. I sprayed Captain Jacks Insecticidal Super Soap and it definitely killed about 99% of the thrips on the leaves. I found 2 barely moving. I did spray some on the soil but I’m assuming that won’t do anything?? I was planning to wait until each batch hatches and spray again. Would granules be more effective long term?

There’s several life cycles to attack so just getting the adults won’t stop them completely, the soap won’t get the larvae unfortunately. You can keep spraying the soap if you would prefer it’ll just be a ton of work and may spread to other plants.

I’d recommend what a previous commenter suggested of pyrethrin. It’s derived from chrysanthemums and considered organic gardening.

I’ll definitely do that then! Thank you!
