# Help! I noticed these small dark brown/black spots on my bird of…

Help! I noticed these small dark brown/black spots on my bird of paradise. Most are on the leaves but there’s a couple on the stem. The spots are really small and raised, seems like they’re on top of the surface or coming out of the plant. Otherwise she is a big happy plant in a bright window. Is this something I should be worried about?

They look like scales to me which are a type of pest, I’ve never personally had to deal with them but try pry them off, there’s also more help on the internet:)

It’s difficult to see in the photos. It’s scale if they look like the attached picture. There are thousands of varieties of scales. Some are soft and others look like fuzzy mealybugs.

Get rid of them by dabbing each with rubbing alcohol. Scrape off the hard shell ones with the edge of a plastic knife. Then, use an alcohol wipe on the juvenile ones under the crusty shell. Wipe off the soft shell ones with dishwashing soapy water which cleans up any sticky residue they leave on the plant. Repeat applications a few times until you see no more. Clean hands m/tools before touching other plants. Wipe down the pot and entire area under and around the pot. Isolate infected plants, for sure. 🍀🪴
