Sheffield made plants has some good info. Some plants need specific care, so you may want to look for more sources to repot orchids or something. It looks like we are not supposed to post links.

I look for two signs before repotting: the plant has grown and the pot looks proportionally too small; roots are starting to come through the drainage hole. The best way is to gently remove the plant from the pot and see what the roots look like. If they are growing in circles around the pot, they need a larger home!

There are no specific items that determine when to repot. It depends a lot on the plant. Some like to have their roots crowded and others not so much. In general though, roots coming out the drainage hole, requires a check. The other thing I try to be aware of is how often watering is required and along with that how fast is the water going thru the soil. If you pour on a lot of water and it seems to take a long time to drain, the pot may be filled with roots.
