My brother gave me his Vigoro Yucca Cane to try to save (he overwatered it) so I took off all the dead leaves and left it alone for about 3 weeks. The remaining leaves starting dying and the smaller trunk was squishy so I suspected it had root rot. I took it out the pot and rinsed the roots off. Do they look normal? The one with the new growth is the squishy trunk and the other one is the one with leaves. I also read that the new growth is a sign of the plant’s last ditch effort to save itself. Any advice on what I should do?

(The roots were also basically taking over the pot and they ended up breaking through the inside pot. I’m not sure if that could’ve caused this?)

I would cut the new growth off to save it. Otherwise the rot will eventually cut off its nutrient supply. Treat the roots with some 1/3 peroxide/water to kill off any baddies.

Do I just cut it with scissors? What do I do with it then? Sorry I’m still new to plants. Also, after I treat the roots can I repot it or do I need to wait?

Yes, treat it then pot it back up. Anything you can cut it with. Ideally sterilize with alcohol or peroxide before and after. Scissors, knife, garden poppers. Then you can pot it up with the larger one. Or prop it in water. I'd just feel along it and make sure there's no squishy, and when you cut, check the cut to make sure there's no discoloration.

Okay! I’m probably gonna put it in a cup of water. Do I leave it in there until roots start to grow? And does it need a specific type of water?

I'd leave it till it roots. It shouldn't matter what water. Unless you have really hard water or something.
