# I need a lot of help 😭😬. I have fungus gnats and I already repotted…

I need a lot of help 😭😬. I have fungus gnats and I already repotted my plants, cleaned their roots and the pots, and gave them fresh dirt. I also have been watering them with water infused with misquito bits, put some on the top of the dirt, and put sticky traps in each of the pots. THEY'RE STILL ALIVE THOUGH. 3 out of the 4 pots they're in are my larger ones, so I was wondering what I can do to add drainage to them to keep them from being so wet. Also, did I do anything wrong? Do you suggest doing anything else to get rid of them?? Thanks!

It sounds like you’re doing everything right. Do the current pots have good drainage holes? It might take a few times to get rid of them. Also maybe neem oil or hydrogen peroxide could help?

Have you tried sprinkling a layer of diatomaceous earth on top of the soil? It doesn’t harm the plant, but the powder’s particles have microscopic jagged edges that kill gnat larvae as they try to come out of the soil. You can find bags of diatomaceous earth at most hardware stores that have an outdoor section, or a livestock section (it’s commonly sprinkled in livestock food troughs to kill bug pests).

Don’t use any organic fertilizer. Stay away from soil mixes that have organic fertilizers. Get neem Max (make sure it’s Max) and mix it with water and dawn dish soap. Water plants normally. They’ll disappear.

You can water plants with dish soap and neem oil mix too :D ??? I had no idea just a rookie over here . I thought you could only wipe leaves and stems with neem oil mix .

You definitely can! The dawn soap is used with neem so you can mix it with water otherwise you can’t mix them because neem is an oil and oil can’t mix with water. 😌

Bottom watering has helped me tremendously keeping the gnats away. At least the majority. Still seem then occasionally.

This might be a stupid question, but how do you do that...?

Let the water soak into the soil from the drainage holes by setting the pot into a container of water until the top of the soil gets moist. Then, fully drain the excess water.

Adding perlite to the soil helps with aeration and drainage. Letting the soil dry completely before watering again will keep it from being so wet. Soil needs also depend on the type of plant.

Def bottom water, the top couple of inches of soil need to dry out and you’ll see a difference

Bottom water as a preventative. You can pour hydrogen peroxide water mix into the soil to target the eggs and larva. If you do this do it weekly/bi-weekly for 2-3 weeks. I would also put a generous layer of sand ontop of your soil. The sand will prevent them from digging into the soil. You have to be patient when getting rid of pests so just keep at it. Also, don’t put mosquito bits on your soil, it can mold. Just keep soaking the bits in water.

Hydrogen peroxide water is good for your plants every once in a while/once a month. If you do this just do it for 2-3 weeks because too much can damage the roots of the plants.

I'd caution against leaving mosquito bits in the soil. They can and will mold and contaminated your soil. It is a slow process to kill off fungus gnats. Expect it to take at least a month or 3. The bits only kill larvae, so unless you are catching a crap ton of adults on the sticky traps, then they'll still be flying around and depositing eggs. If I remember correctly they have a life cycle of like 45 or 54 days. So you have to just keep treating till you don't see any. I use the microbiolift drops for ponds. Same ingredients as the mosquito bits, but like a drop or 2 per gallon of water. And you don't have to wait for the bits to soak for several hours/overnight before administering
