\*UPDATE: One additional question: I just noticed today that one of my calatheas’ leaves are weighing down its stems. Is this a problem or will they get stronger?\*

Forgive me for the wet leaves, I had just misted them… My calethea leaves are browning on the edges and I see some spotting on a couple of them. Also, I don’t know if it’s normal but the top of the leaf stems seem off-color. I didn’t get a picture but even though I’m getting new shoots, the base of the plant has a lot of browning on stems and low leaves.

I follow instructions for watering with Planta, delaying if the top inch of soil isn’t dry, and I mist them daily, sometimes twice daily because we live in a very dry climate.

What am I doing wrong?

brown tips are just part of the indoor calathea experience. misting can cause rot and bacterial/fungal growth. these are also very sensitive to salts and other hard minerals in tap water.

even if you do everything “right” chances are you’ll still end up with brown tips, so cut yourself some slack 😊💚

I’ve been using alkaline water so I hope that helps! Should I mist less maybe? Or just give in and get an humidifier? lol

humidifier won’t hurt (personally i can’t be bothered)

watering “little but often” is a good method for calathea, since they don’t want to dry out, but don’t want to sit in water.

if you have a handheld steamer for clothing you can give your plant a pass with that every couple of days (this method is my preference when I \*must\* provide humidity— i think it’s fun)

This is an excellent idea.

it’s fun!

When you say “little but often,” do you mean less water more frequently?

Sometimes for calatheas / marantas just the tips being brown may mean your water has some stuff in it if you aren’t using distilled, like extra salts / lime whatever.

I’ve been using alkaline. I heard it’s preferred for plants. Maybe that’s not accurate though?

Alkaline water has a higher pH / more minerals in it I think?
Some calatheas are really sensitive to that stuff. Since it’s not the whole leaf browning and just the tip of the leaf it could be some of the minerals in the water 🤔
I use distilled water for all of my plants but it depends on environment / location / etc

Hmmm I wish I could use my tap water but it’s soft so it’s full of salt. I’ll consider trying distilled. If I wasn’t watering plants every day, I would do it now lol.

Felt that one, it can get pricey pretty quick 😔 best of luck! Calatheas like to be drama queens
