# Help!! I’ve had this lucky bamboo for about 5 years, it’s the plant…

_Snailed님이 2024-09-21에 게시함_

Help!! I’ve had this lucky bamboo for about 5 years, it’s the plant I’m most attached to out of all of them. Just today one of its stalks turned yellow, and when this happened with a previous bamboo it died. Is there anything I can do?
I separated the yellow stalk from the green ones and repotted them both. I’m going to try using distilled water for now to avoid having it be overexposed to fluoride/chlorine. Is there anything I missed or anything more I can do?

-Roots on the yellow stalk are thinning, while the green stalks look just fine root wise

Sorry that happened to you. It happened to me recently too. Once they turn yellow, there is no turning back. What I did, as soon as I noticed my stalk was yellowing, I cut off whatever bit I could still save from it. I threw away the yellow and am now rooting the green pieces in water.

That’s what I figured, that’s sad. I’ll see if I can keep the rest of my plant alive

By the way, when you said rooting them in water, did you also have rocks and stuff in there too or was it just water? I want to know so I can do whatever I can for my plant 😅 right now I have it in its normal pot with rocks

Yeah, there are glass pebbles in there. I just added them back into the same container I had the original. I just sat them at the top, since the pieces I cute were tiny.

It looks like one of your \*\*lucky bamboo\*\* stalks has yellowed, which can be concerning, especially when the other stalks still look healthy. Here’s a breakdown of what might be happening and what you can do:

\### 1. \*\*Yellow Stalk\*\*:
\- \*\*Cause\*\*: A yellowing stalk in lucky bamboo often indicates it’s dying, which could be due to overexposure to chemicals like \*\*fluoride or chlorine\*\*, improper care, or old age.
\- \*\*Solution\*\*: Since you already separated the yellow stalk, it was a good step. Unfortunately, once a stalk turns yellow, it usually can't recover. Focus on saving the healthy stalks.

\### 2. \*\*Switch to Distilled or Filtered Water\*\*:
\- \*\*Why\*\*: Tap water often contains chemicals like \*\*fluoride, chlorine, or salts\*\*, which lucky bamboo is sensitive to. Using \*\*distilled or filtered water\*\* is a great idea to prevent further damage.
\- \*\*Action\*\*: Continue using distilled water to ensure the remaining stalks stay healthy.

\### 3. \*\*Check the Roots\*\*:
\- You mentioned the roots on the yellow stalk were thinning, while the green stalks look fine. Healthy roots should be white or light tan. Keep an eye on the root health of the green stalks, and if the roots start turning brown or mushy, trim them back.

\### 4. \*\*Monitor Light Exposure\*\*:
\- Lucky bamboo likes \*\*indirect light\*\*. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause the stalks to yellow and the leaves to burn. Ensure the plant is not too close to intense light sources.

\### 5. \*\*Proper Drainage and Cleanliness\*\*:
\- If your bamboo is in water, ensure you clean the container and change the water every week to prevent bacteria build-up. Also, remove any debris from the water to avoid rot.
\- If it’s planted in soil, make sure the soil is well-draining and doesn’t stay too soggy.

\### 6. \*\*Prune Damaged Leaves or Stems\*\*:
\- If you notice yellow leaves on the remaining stalks, prune them off to allow the plant to focus on healthy growth.

\### 7. \*\*Fertilization\*\*:
\- If you fertilize, use only a \*\*small amount\*\* of water-soluble fertilizer designed for houseplants, but don’t overdo it as too much fertilizer can also cause yellowing.

By continuing to care for the healthy stalks with clean, distilled water, proper light, and regular maintenance, the rest of your lucky bamboo should stay healthy! Keep a close eye on the water quality and root health to prevent further issues.
