Hi! My name is Collin and I am new to Planta. My grandma passed away, and she had been taking care of my Norfolk Island Pine for about 10 years. It is 10 years old, and I’ve never cared for it before. She had it in a south facing window, and I have it in a west facing window and I think it’s getting to much sun the tips are brown a bit in some spots and I want to stop hurting it early on. I’m going to move it away from my window, but what can I do to help it get better? I am a beginner I know very little about plants, and I really care about this one and don’t want it to die. Please help me if you can!

Norfolk plants thrive in partial/shaded areas. Plants get stressed when moved period so its probably just adjusting. I would move it somewhere that gets 8-12 hours on indirect light and give it time. Make sure the soil is moist but not for longer than two weeks after last time you watered. That long usually means root rot.

The Norfolk Island pine is native to Norfolk island! Imagine that! They will not tolerate temperatures below 35. Personally I would bring it in if your temperatures get below 50. They need lots of light even some direct sun. In the house a South window is good. They like high humidity, low humidity could be the cause of your Browning tips. I would advise you to get a humidifier. They will tolerate some dimmer light but in the summer they will enjoy being out in the sun. If you are in an area that has real hot summers I would not expose it to the hot midday Sun. They prefer temperatures around 70°, not always possible to maintain. Water every 1 to 2 weeks keeping the soil moderately moist. Probably every week in summer and every two weeks in winter. Fertilizing regularly is important. Use a fertilizer formulated for conifers or azaleas. This is because it provides the acid environment the Norfolk Island pine loves. Use the fertilizer at 1/2 strength of the package directions every time you water. Reduce the fertilizer when it has to be in low light. Otherwise it will get leggy.
