I have a little fly problem and I’m worried that they laid eggs and my little nuisance will become a bigger problem. I bought neem oil I was going to use to spray the soil of my plants, but also read cinnamon and peppermint were good deterrents for pests. Can I use all 3 at once? Or should I use the neem oil to get rid of the problem and then use the peppermint and cinnamon after to keep any pests from returning?

Also, I’m worried about overwatering my plants with using this spray. How often should I spray (if more than once)?

If you have fungus gnats you need to get mosquito bits — follow the package instructions \& water with that. it will treat the larvae.

cinnamon is a good natural antifungal. i save neem oil for thrips \& my outdoor plants usually

I literally just sprinkle it onto the surface of my soil, or sometimes the drainage dish, if I see or anticipate some kind of fungus. My plants only ever really get that fuzzy yellow one that looks like little beads

I’ll look into getting that, thanks! What if it’s not time to water my plant? If overwatering causes flies I don’t want to over water but I don’t want to wait until the next watering. Does a little go a long way?

Neem oil isn’t for soil, you spray it on your plants once a week, at least that’s what I’ve done. But I didn’t use it for fungus gnats, I used it for other pests because it kills on contact.
You can put rubbing alcohol in your water to make a mixture and water your plant with that for fungus gnats, water less frequently, and use sticky traps. The cinnamon is ok because fungus gnats took residence in your soil because it was too wet (overwatering can lead to gnats very easily), and cinnamon sucks the moisture out of the top (where the gnats go to lay their eggs) so it’s more preventative I think

Ive tried the hydrogen peroxide mix but I still have flies. I did 3% 1 cup and 4 cups water ratio. Should I do it again? I don’t want to over water my plants, especially if that brings on flies 🙈

I think the flies came from the soil I bought (I bought miracle grow soil from Home Depot) because I didn’t have any flies with my plants until I brought the soil home. I’m new to growing plants so I had a lot of cuttings I was propagating in water, so I hadn’t really been plants because at that time I didn’t have many plants. I don’t know that propagating plants in water would’ve brought on flies.

In my experience it’s not a one time fix, it requires a couple times but it’s a cheap option. Just use it when you have to water next.

If the flies are coming from the soil, you can always repot with all new fresh soil (not from the miracle grow bag)! That might help, but I’m not sure how many plants you have.

Water propagation doesn’t attract fungus gnats, but moist soil does

Ooo so I just finished a fungus gnat infestation, and I put up traps in the pots to test where the flies were coming from. Then replaced the soil in the infected ones, worked a charm!
