# The second wave of mealybugs appeared after the first attempt to…

_Pubblicato da Sunny il 2024-07-20_

The second wave of mealybugs appeared after the first attempt to eradicate the infestation two weeks ago on my Hoya Krimson Queen. They brought spider mite friends this week. I used Dawn spray foam dishwashing detergent because it is sticky and acts like a car wash completely covering all areas including the crevices where spider mites like to nest.

The teaching moment is some insects may live and continue to spread especially if their eggs hatch after the first insecticidal treatment. You have to regularly inspect your plants.

Ugh, yeah they always rear their ugly heads right as you breathe a sigh of relief

I always add systemic granules into the soil too. I know some people like to avoid chemicals, but it’s the one thing that I think has kept my plants pest free after a MAJOR infestation of thrips last fall

My plants live outside for 9 months of the year. They will never be pest free. I try to keep major outbreaks to a minimum. I try to avoid heavy pesticides especially ones that can attack my lungs including systemic ones. I would trash the plant first. I tossed a Zebrina because of repeated spider mites infestations.

I wish I lived in a climate where my plants could be outdoors for more than 1/2 the year! It’s basically opposite for me. 😬

I understand.
