I have four of these Tineke rubber plants. The large one, the oldest, came with most of the lower leaves, looking like yours.
I have looked and looked and cannot figure out the reason why. Now one of my juvenile Tinekes showed up with one leaf looking the same. I hope somebody comes up with something, because it’sn driving me nuts and I hate to lose leaves. Good luck to you and me! 😊💚🪴

Did you repot recently ?

No :(

Here’s an old picture of my Tineke before I chopped off those bad leaves. Similarities? I hope somebody in the know will figure this out for us. Good luck! 😊💚🪴

it looks like the browning is only in areas with white variegation, so that might be a clue! white variegation tends to be tougher to keep looking nice because those areas don’t photosynthesize. usually it’s a lighting issue but i would do a little research about that for more info.

Many thanks! I will definitely look into that as no one has mentioned a lighting issue yet. So, do you think it’s possibly sunburn on the white parts of the leaves since they’re overly sensitive? Yes, I will have to do more investigation. Again, TXS.

I can’t give any advice on your Tineke, but I looked at the other plants on your profile to see if you had any earlier progress photos of the tineke available, and noticed you have one plant ID’d as a “sedum burrito”. Wanted to let you know that the type you have is actually “sedum morganianum”. They’re very closely related, and very often mistaken for each other, and might not make too much difference in what Planta recommends you do, but I thought I’d let you know. This one’s mine, for reference. Best of luck with your Tineke. I hope you get a good solution from here. It’s a very lovely plant. 🌱

The best advice I can give as for your Tineke would be to try to factor out a few possible causes of the browning
1\. The location. If you recently moved it, rotated it, if that spot is suddenly getting more sun, etc.
2\. Possible pests. Not necessarily in the soil all the time, but if you haven’t checked the soil, that’s always a good rule of thumb. If the soil looks good it’s also good to check the undersides of the leaves or any possible pest risks from the location of the plant or any signs of pests in the house from other plants. If so with other plants, but you can’t find them in the Tineke, perhaps consider soaking it in a mix of hydrogen peroxide and filtered water, then letting it drain completely and waiting before watering it to let the soil dry completely.
3\. If you recently moved or repotted it, and perhaps the plant is a little stressed from the move
4\. Any changes in water (lime, if you use tap water, rain water, or filtered water to water your plants)
5\. If you’re using fertilizer. Some fertilizers if not diluted enough or used too often can burn the plant, especially the leaves
Hope this helps. Really hope you find out what’s wrong with the Tineke.

Ooh thank you!

No problem! And best of luck with those two as well. Jades are my favorite, and my sedum morganianum is becoming a quick favorite for me too. My best tip for that one is to try not to move it or touch it, cause the leaves are fragile, and if some fall off, you can put them in on a small plate with soil, mist them every 3 days for a few weeks (it took about 3 weeks for mine) and they’ll likely grow some new roots that you can just pop into your current plant to slowly make it fuller in time

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately, all that criteria is negative, so the only thing I can come up with is a fertilization problem or, as someone else mentioned, that it might be a lighting issue since the markings appeared on the white part of the leaves. I will have to do more investigation. Let me know if you come up with something else. Again, TXS. 😊💚🪴

I was doing some more research on this problem of discoloration on my Tinekes leaves and saw a picture of a leaf that was discolored from fertilization. The damage looked just like that done to my Tineke plant. Food for thought? Unfortunately, I can’t remember exactly where I saw it, but it was on a Planta site. Good luck! I’ll keep checking back to see if anybody comes up with a good answer.
