# I recently received this monstera as a gift. After it was purchased,…

_Posted by Oliver on 2025-09-04_

I recently received this monstera as a gift. After it was purchased, it started to develop these black marks on the leaves and some patches of the stems.

I thought about re-poting it so that I can see what conditions the roots are in but I don't want to put it under too much stress as it was only recently moved into my flat.

Unsure what the best approach is or what the problem could be.

If possible, trim back all the blackened parts. I understand not wanting to stress it out but if you can manage getting a root check in, better to be safe than sorry.

Okay, will trim back the leaves and take a look at the roots. Thank you!!!

It’s overwatered. Looks like it’s standing in water. Check the roots. Does the pot have drain holes?🪴🍀

Also, it’s already under stress. But, taking action is needed to prevent it from dying, reducing the current issues. Don’t worry too much about over stressing it at this point. The plant will settle in ounce it is healthy.

The pot has drain holes and the soil was dry when I received it. I'm assuming they probably overwatered it at the shop before it was purchased. Will take a look at the roots and try to save it. Thank you!!

That's fusarium. Remove affected leaves and treat with fungicide in addition to checking for any root rotting

I see. I have two follow up questions on this. 1) Is there any risk of this being passed on to my other plants? I have already kept it seperate from the others as it is a new plant but just want to know if there is a risk. 2) what would be the best thing to do about the stem that has a black patch? I don't think I'm going to be able to cut this back so not sure what to do for this part.

It can spread. Usually it'd happen by direct touch, but being a fungus, spores can become airborne (just be sure to remove affected leaves before/when you see the yellow ring and you should be fine.) As for the affected part of stem, you can keep it, just be sure to hit it when treating, and retreat as needed until there's no sign of it for a week or two

Update: I checked for root rot and washed the roots but they seem to be fine which is good. I did notice a small patch of what looked like mold (attached a photo) so removed that as best as I could. I have cut away most of the affected leaves but it seems that a majority of the leaves have at least a small patch of black on them so can't really cut them all off.

Yep that's mold, but thankfully the roots around it look reasonably healthy
