Friends! My money plant has seemed to be doing well and has new growth but the bottom leaves are turning yellow. Does anyone know what causes this? Is this normal?

Many plants drop the oldest leaves when trying to grow new leaves. So, if they are the oldest near the base, I would guess it is natural. If it is new leaves, I would worry.

Those fading and yellow leaves are signs of overwatering in this variety of pilea. That’s how I killed the only Chinese money plant I ever owned. Let the soil dry out before watering.

I think you might be on to something. I’ve been following Planta prompts but i think this may be the issue

I water mine when it’s about 80-90% dry. Try that. If you don’t think it’s a watering problem, it could be older leaves dying off as mentioned above. My older leaves die off every once in awhile. 🙏🏼🌿

A moisture meter is very helpful in determining when to water. All my plants are super dry right now, but still when I bottom water, the surface may be misleading. You can get one for about $7, and use Planta for reminders to check. Using a plain wooden chopstick and if it comes out dry, water, if it collects soil or water, you likely need to wait. I find that using a moisture meter and waiting until it is just dry has helped my plants. Planta helps me remember to check, and I can always Snooze it for a few days or skip a watering. It can also be helpful to remember that Pepperomias are semi-succulent and like to dry out before another watering. True succulents like Jades have to get dry because they store so much water in the leaves. I have seen much greater happiness in my succulents since switching to a sandier, well-draining soil and making sure it gets into the dry reading before watering. It can be hard to walk away when you think it needs watering but the plant will appreciate it.
