I purchased a ginseng ficus a few weeks ago. Right after leaving the store I realized that it had a mushy base which was very concerning. The roots looked ok, but I was still worried. There were lots of flies around it and on the soil (I don’t really have that with other plants so I’m not really sure if that’s normal or not). Well it’s in its spot now and the leaves keep yellowing and then dropping (a lot!). I have it on my dresser with a strong artificial light and I’ve been misting it, but would it like more to be outside since it’s a bonsai? I’m new to this species so I need all the help I can get. Thank you so much!

Sound like root rot and fungus gnats. I would change the soil with better drainage. Make sure the pot has drain holes.

Ficus are sensitive to moves. They drop lots of leaves even when moving them around a room. The leaves grow back once the plant is settled.

Search older posts for fungus gnat treatment options. There are many posts.

I would remove it from the soil and give it a good rinse all over. Remove the mushy stuff and then let dry out a day or two before replacing it in new soil.
This is a picture of mine. It’s about 16 years old.
