# I recently bought a Chinese money plant (Pilea) and the whole top…

_Posted by Pokasun on 2024-03-20_

I recently bought a Chinese money plant (Pilea) and the whole top layer of soil is roots. The plant seems happy as it is making babies, however, i’m concerned that this is not normal. Is it okay to keep the plant as it is, or should I try removing some of the babies and put it in a different pot? Thank you!

Pileas are super sensitive to being repotted, so I’d definitely delay— especially if he’s still adjusting to his new home. I’d just add some well-draining soil to the top layer. You can pop out the babies and propagate or leave as is— if he’s happy, dont disturb him too much. 😇

I didn’t wait when I got mine. I also live in California.
Repot usually when I get them home. Unless I don’t have proper soil.

i would add a bit of soil and/or worm castings on top next time you water and leave it be. i only repot rootbound plants if they seem to be struggling, as repotting can damage the roots, and definitely will if you choose to detangle them. i don’t see the point of disturbing a happy plant
