My mum got me this prayer plant today to try to save, and it’s looking very sad!! any tips on how i can nurse it back to life? it needs a very good water and i’ll consider repotting when it gets a bit healthier, but that’s about all i can guess at right now.

I'd repot into the correct type of soil asap. The plant won't be able to recover if you keep it in an unsuitable soil. You should also get a look at the roots to make sure there's no rot and the plant is in the correct sized pot.  
Once it's in a proper pot and soil with a correct watering schedule, it should perk right up.
