I give up! this is the second of this type of plant and I think I’m just not vibing with this plant. Now one of the leaves has brown spots and is going to make the leaf drop. I even tried changing the windowsill ! What are your thoughts?

I do think it’s in too large of a pot. You want to go only 1-2 inches larger than the root ball.

How can you tell the difference between root ball and root bound?

If it’s root bound, the roots will be swirled around the bottom of the pot and up the sides and there will be more roots than soil. Root ball means the total of roots which if you scrunch them up into a ball in your hands then that’s the size you go off of to know to go 1-2 inches more than that circumference of the ball of roots.

Root bound is a condition of the roots that includes an overgrowth of roots possibly blocking drain holes.

The root ball is the volume the roots occupy. It includes both the soil and roots within that volume. My larger spider plant shows roots that are ‘almost’ root bound with thick finger like roots. That cylindrical volume is the root ‘ball.’ I would repot in a pot size at most 1 inch to 2 inches wider than this root ball.

Are you physically checking the soil moisture before watering and snoozing the planta reminder if necessary?

Does this plant suffer from the lack of chlorophyll issue like many other very white plants?

So I put him in front of a different window because we got a sun warning here for excessive heat. I thought that would be better since planta says it needs part sun. Since then , we got a new little leaf. I can try a smaller pot for sure. And yes. I do check the soil moisture before watering.

I know most (but not all) ficus varieties are also very sensitive to any change whatsoever, even changing their location, repotting, watering changes, etc. I’m not sure about this particular species, but some leaf drop is pretty common after a change, so sometimes you just need to give it time. I have a triangularis that lost almost all of its leaves when I brought it home last fall and I basically gave up on it. This spring though I started following Planta’s advice and it has regrown almost all that it lost, plus some. Make the changes suggested in these comments and then leave it alone for a while. Don’t be discouraged if it drops more leaves after downsizing the pot and all. Just give it time :)

I stopped buying all ficus plants years ago because they don’t vibe with my lifestyle. They are sensitive to everything. They do well if left alone in one place. They practically shoot leaves when moved.

I’ve had bad luck with this plant too. I got a new one recently. I decided to keep it outside and it gets morning sun. It seems happy 😊

I have mine in a window that gets morning sun and it’s been loving it! Three new leaves this spring. I moved it from bright indirect light where it was doing nothing

Update no one asked for but I’m invested in this thread. Robbins has been repotted. I’m going to leave her alone for a while now
