I’m dreading the day I have my first outbreak… do you use anything for prevention of pests and other diseases? Or best to check plants frequently and only treat at the first sign of a problem?

I wipe my plant’s leaves with deluded neem and peppermint oil in water (i don’t have exact measurements, look on the bottle, do half of that) 3 weeks but if you do it in bright light it’ll burn leaves so do it in low light. Or trurn off any grow lights if you have them or do in the evening

I use Bonide systemic. And frequently check plants for pests. Even with the systemic I will find a mealy bug or two. But that’s only occasionally. After bug removal I spray with insecticidal soap. About every week for a month. Have only had spider mites once. And fungus gnats just a couple every couple months. Then I turn on the bug light at night for several.

If you get a systemic make sure it’s one that’s rated for spider mites, some can actually make the mites more prolific!

I didn’t know one existed. Do you have a brand name.

Any insecticide that is a neonicotinoid are ones you’ll want to avoid. The most common would be Imidacloprid

I just had some scale insects on a fern, and they've been very easy to physically remove with a q-tip. Idk if they'll return from any young ones i didn't see, but so far those are no big deal to treat

honestly i think the best way to keep pest out is to research the plants ur getting to see if they are known for getting pests, and just staying away from those ones. each outbreak ive had has been because of a plant whose been known for pests and i thought i would be different. and if you want plants that are known for them maybe just make sure to distance them from ur other plants. once ur plants are all touching it’s hard to keep pests under control!
