Mine does that when it’s overwatered…. I have not tried to grow IN water

The stem could be rotting, make sure it isn’t soft. If so trim the soft part and let the plant dry out of water for a day or two to let the wound callous. This keeps it from rotting. Also make sure the leaves are getting plenty of sunlight during the day.
