# I need some help 😔 my rattlesnake plant had been declining for…

_Lagt ut av Quill den 2025-01-12_

I need some help 😔 my rattlesnake plant had been declining for months now, its leaves folded in half like this and no matters where I put it or how dark or light it was they never open anymore. Its probably half the size it used to be, it doesn’t have any pests that I can tell and the roots seem healthy, no root rot at least. What happened?? And can I fix it??

I would give it a good watering — especially if you have drainage holes I would soak it. That plant likes to be constantly moist (not wet all the time though) in my experience

Mm alright! Ill give that a try!

I think these guys might also like humidity too!

So a pebble tray maybe! I’ll definitely give that a go, the other plants might like it to!

For sure! Putting other plants around this guy too will increase the relative humidity in the area as well :) hope that helps!

Folding or curling of leaves is usually a sign of under watering. Plus it is a calathea. They need lots of humidity. If you live in snow country, your indoor humidity is probably in the teens. This plant needs closer to 50%.

They are sensitive to everything including low light, tap water in general, tap water too cold, low humidity, too wet/dry soil and too much/too little fertilizer. You have to check each potential issue.

Ive read that they are finicky plants! Ill keep all of that in mind!

I would start by adding a grow light about 1 foot above it. That area looks too dark. Use the light meter app (Planta or online) to see the amount of light reaching the plant.

Use a chopstick, wooden meat skewer or similar to check for moisture in the soil. Bottom water with tepid distilled or filtered water if the soil is dry. Let it soak until the top soil is moist. Let it completely drain.

I don’t recommend pebble trays. They provide a place to attract the roots to grow out of the pot drainage holes. A small humidifier is better.

I was thinking about adding a grow light to it, so I’ll definitely do that as well, thank you for all the advice!

Curling leaves can be a sign of low humidity, temperatures that it doesn't like, minerals and chemicals in the water source, and underwatering. With these things in mind I would be sure I'm using distilled or rain water, use a pebble tray or a small humidifier to improve humidity, keep it evenly moist but never let it sit in a saucer of water, place it away from drafts and heat sources,

Thank you! I might do a little bit of the pebble try and little bit of a humidifier, I always use filtered drinking water for my plants is there a notable difference between that and rainwater?

I'm not sure I agree with Sunny. I've never had problems with roots growing out of the bottom of a pot due to a pebble tray. If the roots are growing out of the bottom of the pot it's a good sign it needs to be repotted. Sorry Sunny.
