# I was wondering if anyone had some good tips on Calathea, I feel like…

I was wondering if anyone had some good tips on Calathea, I feel like I’m failing with them. I’ve lost one from mealies and I think another one of mine is dying too. I know they like humidity and not to be dry but what else can I do? Let me know!

Use distilled, filtered, rain, or treated water. I use api tap water conditioner. Just a couple drops per gallon. My Calathea has loved it. I water when my bamboo stick is mostly dry and just the tip of the stick is slightly still moist. Make sure it’s in a nice chunky soil mix.

Pray. 😂 I keep trying… but I always struggle to keep these happy (or alive). So finicky

Hang in there, they’re tough! I cut mine down last summer because I thought it was dead and it grew back. I’ve tried everything and it still has brown tips. I wish I could help you but I can’t seem to figure it out either!

I’ve found most of my plant problems are light related. Sometimes it shows itself as a watering problem, but in reality it’s not using a normal amount of water due to lack of light. Humans eyes are designed to adjust to varying light conditions, so we are pretty poor judges of “low light” vs. no light. I have a ~12x12 room with a large south facing window and a west facing sliding glass door. It always seems SUPER bright, but if I put a plant in the northeast corner it will only get about 30 footcandles which is not enough for any plant long term.
