# While Planta flagged my aloe as needing water, the soil is quite wet…

_Postat av BrownThumbedWalsh den 2024-10-01_

While Planta flagged my aloe as needing water, the soil is quite wet and one of the bottom leaves fell right off. Pictured is the fallen leaf with a white looking rot which was originally below the soil. What should I do?
Note: the burnt looking tip of one leaf I did almost 8 months ago leaving it in a high sunlight window I believe. Not part of the current issues

Stop watering according to planta asap, especially for your aloe, aloes are one of the hardiest plants and don’t need water for a long period of time. Your plant is experiencing massive root rot, especially given the look of that bottom leaf. Repot in dry chunkier soil and snip off rotted roots and soak the surviving ones in hydrogen peroxide and water mix

Thank you all for the tips. I'm also thinking the problem is my medium. I recently reported using indoor potting mix. It seems this mix holds onto water like a sponge! Any recommendations for a better medium while I'm at the recommendations above?

Ugh yeah that’s probably a huge factor. I use a mix of different things, I use some cactus succulent soil that is rather bark-y and dry, and I add in perlite and orchid bark to the desired consistency for each plant.

Get a good hydrometer! Planta is notorious for recommending too much water. Everyone’s environment is different so use Planta as a guide but before actually giving more water check the soil and make sure it is DRY. In my house it routinely tells me to water my Zz plant twice as often as it needs.

I agree. I use plants as a reminder for me to check on my plants, rather than to know when to water them! It helps me make sure I am not forgetting to check/water any of my plants:

I do to. Planta can’t give exact advice on watering there are too many variables. But it does act as a great reminder 😀
