# I bought my Bettina Ivy last Sunday. I think the big mistake was that…

_Opslået af MaryC den 2024-01-25_

I bought my Bettina Ivy last Sunday. I think the big mistake was that I brought it home on a very cold evening, it was about 14F and I didn't put it in any bag or box to protect it from the cold.

When I noticed on Monday that the tips of some of the leaves were dry, I thought it was due to cold burn. I checked Google and some resources mentioned watering the plant to help it. I did so and sprayed it a little with neem oil solution to prevent fungus gnats.

Since Monday, every day I have found more and more leaves with dry tips or completely withered.

Please help me save him!

ivy is cold-hardy down to about 0°F so i doubt it’s cold damage. looks more like a watering issue to me. also, neem oil shouldn’t be used as a preventative. if you’d like to rid the soil of fungus gnats, i’d recommend watering with a hydrogen peroxide solution

Okay, I got it. It's good to know that ivy is frost-resistant.

So if it's a watering problem, how can I fix it? I really don't want to let him die!
You also mentioned a solution of hydrogen peroxide, could you explain how to prepare it, in what proportions?

I'm new to growing plants so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

it looks like it’s probably under watered. did you check the roots? it may be pot bound also. to prevent and treat watering issues, make sure the plant isn’t pot bound or rotting and check the soil before watering. ivy likes to be watered frequently, once the top layer of soil has dried. the hydrogen peroxide solution is a great treatment for mold and fungus gnats, it also aerates the soil. mix 1 part 3% (topical) hydrogen peroxide to at least 4 parts water and water as usual with the solution. you might hear some fizzling, that’s the peroxide doing its job killing microbes in the soil. i always recommend watering with a mycorrhizae-enriched fertilizer after a peroxide treatment to reintroduce helpful fungi
