# My ponytail palm has been gradually dying all winter. Its ends are…

_Postat av Kayla den 2024-01-20_

My ponytail palm has been gradually dying all winter. Its ends are completely crispy even after watering it. Now the top of the soil is dry but the bottom is soaking wet. Should I pull the leaves off or cut them? What do I do?

It looks overwatered. Does the pot have drain holes?

Was it repotted before or during winter which could have added excess soil that holds more water than the plant can use?

Does it get full sun for at least 6 hours? Ponytail palms grow to be large trees outside in full sun. The light helps the plant use more water? Sunlight helps the plant produce dark healthy leaves. It needs very bright light if it can’t get direct sunlight. It may need a grow light.

All the brown tipped leaves will die since they are too dry. New leaves can grow once the soil dries out and the plant has sufficient light. I recommend removing the soil and letting it dry or just replace with fresh soil.

Should I cut the dead leaves off?

The dead leaves will easily pull off. Just cut off the dry parts on the green leaves.

You may have too much soil and too large of a pot for the size of the plant. The bottom soil can’t dry out because the roots can’t use the excess water. Notice the pot sizes in the pictures uploaded by the commenters. The plants are within 1 inch of the pot sides. Your palm looks isolated from this angle.

I recommend downsizing to a smaller pot with less soil. Let the soil dry out a bit before repotting. Or change out the soil. Check for root rot and remove any damage. Water only when the soil is completely dry. Better to underwater. The palm stores a lot of water.

Not sure but I wanted to mention my coworker has one at her desk and we do not have any windows on our side of the building. It has done well without direct light.

Hmmm, florescent lighting. She’s in a cubicle in the middle of the office. My office is next to hers but I do not have windows. I have a ZZ, Snake, \& Spider plant that have done well. Our coworkers just got us a lamp for our plants for Christmas. This is my ZZ plant in the photo. I have 3 new shoots growing!
