# Syngonium and I are struggling lol I don’t know what to do with it.…

_Postat av Jo Jo den 2024-01-20_

Syngonium and I are struggling lol I don’t know what to do with it. Needed a repot, so I did that about a week ago and within just a couple days it got all sad and droopy. Gets a lot of indirect bright light. I repotted and watered the next day. I don’t know why I can’t seem to keep these plants healthy 🙄 Not sure if I need to check roots again or add more chunky stuff to the soil or not water it or water it or what. Pot has drainage. Soil is moist but not wet. Some online research is saying they like moist soil, no direct sun so I’m doing that but it’s still looking worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Got this plant from my sister and want to keep it alive!!

There could be a few issues. The first could be stress from repotting. Roots get dry and damaged during repotting. I have about 17 syngoniums and repotted quite a few. They may go limp after repotting. But, they revive within three days.

The second could be watering issues. Syngoniums are epiphytes. They grow on trees in their natural environment without putting in roots. So they like a soil that dries quickly. Constantly moist soil can make them droop and eventually lead to root rot. Let the soil dry between watering.

Third, possibly too much soil and not enough roots to absorb all the moisture in the soil. The root ball and old soil should fill 3/4 of the new pot.

Fourth, insufficient lighting can cause droopy leaves. It needs 6 to 8 hours of consistently bright lights. Your plant had large gaps between leaf nodes indicating the plant is searching for more light or more water. Smaller node gaps near the soil shows the plant got sufficient light/water when it started growing at the nursery or soon after it was acquired. You may need a grow light if the plant does not perk up after the soil dries out.

Finally, this will sound drastic, but, I would cut off all of the empty vines. New leaves won’t come back on them. The plant will start to put out new leaves after the cropping. See pic. 🍀🪴

Thank you Sunny for the very detailed description! I needed that! I was wondering about the gaps and if maybe I should cut it back. And now I am wondering if the pot may be a touch large for him. I do have a smaller pot that I’m wondering if I should put him in. This plant has been around for years!! But as of late was being a touch neglected, so it was given to me. It’s been longer than 3 days since repotting that he’s been droopy. He’s always gotten lots of bright indirect light. I’m not exactly sure of the watering schedule before he came to me though. He was in the same pot as a spider plant, couple snake plants, a couple pothos, and a rope Hoya.
I have put him in a much warmer room, and will give him a few days there to see what happens and if it helps. And if not, then I may just have to bite the bullet and chop him off, and put him in a bit of a smaller pot. I’ve taken a screen shot of the pic so I’ll know where to cut if it comes to that. Drastic as it seems, it could be necessary! Thank you so much for the input!!

You’re welcome. My winter care of my syngoniums is terrible. They are all half crispy! I’m not worried because they grow like crazy.

The inner sides of the new pot should only be 1 inch from the root ball. So, repot from a 4 inch pot to a 6 inch pot, 6 inch to 8 inch, etc,.

I encourage you to cut it. The energy from the roots is going into all those vines. The energy will go into new leaves. Add SuperThrive plant vitamins with diluted fertilizer once a month and the plants will quickly put out new growth in less than a month especially since the room is warmer. You can propagate the cuttings in water and SuperThrive. You will end up with 20 more arrowheads!😂
