# Help! I got this monstera about two years ago. She was thriving until…

Help! I got this monstera about two years ago. She was thriving until we moved into a new apartment. I’ve noticed these light spots on many of the leaves. I keep her inside and water her when the top layer is dry. It takes some time for her to dry out, since I live in South Florida where humidity is high. Any advice? Is the moss on top of the soil keeping her too wet for too long? Or am I not watering often enough? I have her about 4 feet from an east-facing glass door (it’s the only window in the living room). Thanks!

Leafhopper insects. They eat the leaves in layers and leave their feces (black dots) behind. The white areas are chewed showing the inner layers of the leaves. They move like a clan. They will get worse when the weather warms up in spring. You need to quickly eradicate them before they grow in number.

I recommend neem oil or insecticidal soap. Treat all the nearby plants weekly. Leafhoppers are adept at moving around. Better to treat everything in the room or watch for it spreading.

I also recommend removing the moss. It adds no value to the plant and can become a nursery or breeding ground for pests, bacteria and fungus if it stays damp. 🍀🪴

I just followed the steps you recommended and will keep treating with neem. Thank you both so much!
