# My corn plant has been struggling since the summer time. I recently…

_Postat av Amy den 2023-12-08_

My corn plant has been struggling since the summer time. I recently just looked at the dirt and saw mold. Is this a problem? What do I do to solve to mold problem? How do I make it happy again where the leaves don’t look sad? How do I get the stem to not fall over? I have a chopstick tied with yarn to keep it up but it doesn’t seem sturdy enough.

Thanks in advance!

Firstly, this is not a Dracaena species, this is a Chlorophytum orchidastrum, which is a species of spider plant.

If you’re seeing mold, chances are the soil is too dense and this plant is getting overwatered, which is why it isn’t looking too good. Plants need chunky soil mixes with lots of perlite added, and usually also bark pieces. This will allow the soil to be aerated which will prevent overwatering and will get rid of the mold issue. Mine does better in lower lighting but still with moderate humidity.

i used to have this, i stopped leaving the soil wet and let it dry out a bit more and it seemed to get rid of the problem, also keeping the air circulated helped mine.

Perfect. I may have overwatered the last time which caused the mold.

Change the soil with something chunkier. You can make your own by mixing good quality potting soil (2 parts), perlite(one part), and orchid bark (one part). If you’re feeling fancy, add worm castings and horticultural charcoal. When you take the plant out out the moldy soil, rinse the roots under running water, then spray with a water/peroxide mix (one part peroxide, four parts water). Gently add soil back in, tapping along the sides of the pot to help settle the soil into those roots. Once full of soil, lightly press it in, then give the plant a big drink of water.
