I feel insane rn I found thrips on a new plant I got (from a ‘pest-free’ plant swap :) ) they were cuttings of a philodendron red emerald, found 20 yellow larvae and a discord group confirmed were thrips. Cut all of the cuttings and put them in a closed jar and sprayed the other two plants I was quarantining in the same room.

Ive dealt with thrips before so I know the drill— I didn’t see much damage on the plants and don’t see any concerning things on any of the other plants, no spots or yellowing JUST saw the larvae. Obviously im keeping them in the quarantine space for longer now, but what do you guys think as a prognosis? Also what stage of life are these guys in? I’ve had these plants for two weeks. Im hoping this was isolated and I saved my ass from another nightmare.

You’re so fortunate you quarantined these! I just found out about that concept last night from a book I’m reading. I brought home 9 new plants a week ago from an Amish nursery. My nephew told me to check for bugs, which I did but I had already mixed them in with my other plants I’m lucky all looked good.

Honestly if you can I’d say take them out and put them elsewhere anyway. Talking to someone smarter than me they explained that these are juvenile thrips and I most likely got these cuttings with eggs which are laid in the flesh of the plant leaf. They looked completely unharmed and I got lucky when I decided I was going to pot them up today. If I waited they would have become adults and multiplied and I would have been in HUGE trouble. A lot of pests are too tiny for us to see and we only realize it when they’ve done extensive damage. If you can find a place to keep them away for at least a months an give them a good weekly spray with some sort of insecticide spray! Hopefully your plants are okay though!! Sending good vibes!
