Hello! I desperately need help with this dang plant. So I’ve had a mini rose for two years now, named it Thorn In my A\*\*, because it has been exactly that. I moved it outside this summer and it LOVED IT. Never had that many roses and thick stems. Well, I think I should of brought it back inside a few weeks ago as it got cooler and probably watered it better because I kind of forgot and a bunch of leaves dried up, fell off and some are yellow. Well we had thunderstorms for 3 days so it got lots of water. I repotted and refreshed the soil soil, watered it again because of the repot, then brought it inside. Two days later a couple of the leaves are half bright yellow developing in the center/lower portion of the leaf.

Did I overwater it? Could it be transplant shock? Some of the roots got torn off from heavy chunks of soil when I refreshed it, but not a lot.

Also, and the most important… Any tips for keeping this thing alive through the winter?!

Thank you for any help!

Sorry, 😅 I was raised by a sailor and naturally speak that way, so sometimes I forget when it’s not appropriate.

Roses typically go dormant in cooler weather. It will stop blooming and drop leaves. Let it go dormant. Keep it between 25°F and 50°F to keep it dormant until spring. You can pull off all remaining leaves by November if they don’t fall. Don’t trim it until spring. Store it like a potato, cool and dry but not freezing.

Interesting!! And here I thought last winter it was my fault it was looking so poor! Do you still water it infrequently during dormancy? And by “pull off all leaves by November” you mean ALL? Bare stems? I did have a couple of roses and leaves bloom over the winter. But at one point it was down to no leaves… thank you for your constructive criticism AND advice! I really appreciate it 🥰

You can leave it outside and let the cold weather kick it into dormancy. It will naturally drop all the leaves like garden roses. The alternative is to force the dormancy by plucking ALL leaves and putting it in a cold shed or cold garage space. It uses winter to build energy to put out new branches in spring. Normal room temperatures are too warm for roses in winter. They will waste energy trying to grow leaves in winter and won’t go dormant. Also, moving dormant roses to a warm environment will kick it out of dormancy.

Water every two weeks to keep the plant from dying. But, not overly wet.
