# My banana tree condition is worsening. Dr plant told me the problem…

My banana tree condition is worsening. Dr plant told me the problem was overwatering and lack of light. I am following the app’s watering schedule and added growth lights. But it’s getting worse. Any ideas?

Always dip your index finger into the soil to check to see how damp it is before watering, it’s possible that there’s root rot as well, I’d suggest checking the roots

If the roots are rotten it will die, correct?

It can yes

Yeah Planta is often wrong at telling you when you should water your plants, sorry. I use it a lose schedule but am often snoozing my alerts. I use a chopstick to check how wet my soil is and based on the type of plant, I’ll know when to water again.

I am new to plants 😭. I have it in a vase in an apartment. It will be hard to check the roots.

Looks like root rot from looking at the leaves and stem of the large plant. The stems should be firm and bright green, not mushy. The plant will rot from the roots through the core. It will stink like a swamp if you cut off a trunk.
I recommend you cut down the trunk that looks the worst to look for rot in the core. A healthy plant will grow right back at the cut and smell clean. It can grow several inches a day. A sick plant will continue to rot and smell awful when you cut it.
Caution: banana sap will stain clothes/carpet. You won’t see the brown stains until the clothes come out of the dryer.

I will try that

Check above and beneath the leaves and in the crevices for sap eating insects. There is something in the left picture

Thanks. I saw it and removed. Do I need to do anything else?

If it was a big like a cottony mealy bug. Then, that would explain the reason the leaves look yellow. Thrips, mites and mealy bugs suck the moisture out of stems and leaves especially the tender new shoots. I recommend you spray with a soapy dishwater solution or neem oil every week until you don’t see any signs of insects. Spray the soil and the areas/plants under and around the plant. Isolate the plant.
