Please help!

I was given this plant after I lost my baby girl at 38 weeks of pregnancy. I am feeling like a failure, I can’t even keep a plant alive! What do I need to do?

Oh mama, I am so sorry for your loss ❤️. You are not a failure! Plants can be finicky, especially the ones that need higher humidity. I wouldn’t consider these guys a very beginner friendly plant.
I think it may be a mixture or low humidity and too much light! Do you have it really close to the window? These guys do better not in direct light. I have mine a couple feet away from the window,
between an east and north window, with a humidifier in the room, that’s set to stay around 55% humid.

Definitely snip off all the crispy or yellow leaves because if you leave them on, they’ll just start draining energy from the rest of the plant trying unsuccessfully to heal itself. Make sure you clean your scissors, or whatever you use, first. Again, plants can be finicky.) Keep anything that looks healthy. Check the roots too! Look up a YouTube video on how to tell if your plant has root rot. Hopefully not, but I’m trying to think of all options for you! I understand how sentimental this is for you and I really hope you can get it back healthy!

If it keeps declining, look up how to propagate it! I’ve never propagated one myself so I don’t have pointers for that, but I know it’s possible.

I don’t have any plant advice for you but just wanted to say as one mama (human and plant) to another that you’re doing a good job! I can totally see why it would be upsetting to lose this plant but it’s very clear how much you care, and that’s what matters in my opinion. 💜

I see it as a fail on your friends part, for not researching this plant before giving it to you, as this is not a beginner plant. Not your fault for not knowing what its needs are. Most of us have to learn the hard way with Pepperomia. A lot of factors.
Lots of bright INDIRECT light is key. Most of our indoor light is not enough for plants, and occasionally if put in direct sun in a window it can burn it. So its a delicate balance or grow lights are great! From there, letting the soil dry out partially but not completely between waterings is second.
Go from there. I believe in you! You can’t learn if you don’t try and fail and try again.

It looks like it needs to be repotted. Take it out and cut off all the dead leaves and any rotted roots. You’ll be able to tell the good roots from the rotted ones because they will be black and stringy. Repot it in a smaller pot that’s only about 1 inch or so larger than your root ball. Make sure the new pot has drainage and use a soil that has orchid bark or perlite mixed in to give it more air pockets for oxygen to circulate. I been using a soil mixture of 1/3 orchid bark, 1/3 perlite, and 1/3 sphagnum peat moss. Make sure you’re not overwatering. The top 2-3 inches of soil should be completely dry before you water. You can check your soil with your finger or with a moisture meter. Good luck and don’t give up!
