Help! My Jubilee Ivy has fungus gnats, and I don’t know how to handle it! How can I put this to an end and prevent it from spreading to my other plants?

Isolate it. Trap them with yellow sticky traps. Put out a container with some fruit like mashed up bananas and trap them with a lid (I did this recently to get them away from my Staghorn fern using a container with some rotting strawberries). Just be quick when you slam the lid on it. Then shake it up to kill the gnats with the fruit “bombs” (or take outside and open it). You could also try Saran Wrap with some holes poked in it.

Let the soil dry out. They like moisture. As last resort you could also repot it with fresh soil if you think it is a new breeding ground (often my preferred method).

A search online also says you can use hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and dish soap to trap them. Apparently you can add chunks of potato on top of the soil (changed out often) which will help with attracting the larvae. I am going to try that one next time!

I got mosquito bites on Amazon and added to the soil will take about 2-3 weeks for all the gnats to die. The mosquito bits kill all the eggs. The yellow traps are great to kill the ones flying around but need a solution for the eggs, like the comment above try to separate it from the healthy ones. I had my house full with gnats everywhere. Hope it helps.

One more thing, after you resolve the issue you can add some repellents. I just picked up a 5 lb bag of dried lavender to fill up mesh bags and put all around the house. I also picked up a eucalyptus plant.

Repel them with scents they don't like: vinegar, vanilla, pine oil, peppermint, lemon, eucalyptus, and lavender.

There is also something else called companion plants. I was reading more about it last night.

Chives, sage, and garlic are supposed to repel spider mites and other pests. Catnip is another one. I think lavender and eucalyptus will too. Anyway, I am about to fill up my garden with a bunch of herbs to surround and help protect my prize plants. They are all cheaper plants, grow fast and would be easy to replace if needed (and useful for cooking)! Most require full light though, so some indoor lights could be helpful too.

I use cinnamon! after treating with neem and mosquito bits, i like to sprinkle cinnamon on top of the soil and mix it in to the first half inch to inch of the soil. works like a charm for me :)
