# help! I have never owned a plant before, but my mother gave me this 7…

_Geplaatst door Katey op 2023-07-26_

help! I have never owned a plant before, but my mother gave me this 7 days ago , (2nd picture is when I took it home) once I get it home, my boyfriend light it on fire because he said it helps with regrowth?!?! I didn’t get a chance to research anything before he did it… the 1st picture is immediately after he burnt it and the third is what it looks like now 😩

This plant is from my grandfather’s funeral…. I’ve been reading a bunch about it but what are your thoughts?? We put in super thrive after he burned it and put water in it. We’ve just been watering every so often so far.

We have been keeping him in our sunroom, in the corner with no direct sunlight. It stays pretty humid / warm in there throughout the day! I did notice the pot only has 3 very small drain holes….

Here’s what I would do if I was desperate to bring it back: take it out of the pot, check the roots. If they look viable, white parts for example, clean them off, put the plant in a jar with water. Cut off anything brown. Put it in a bright spot. Change the water every so often. Hope for the best. If it comes back, move it back to a pot with soil. This is what I would do. The suggestions of others are equally considerable. I’m sorry you didn’t get to research burning before this unfortunate event. I understand where the idea came from but it’s not a technique I’ve ever seen suggested for houseplants. Research it now if you haven’t already, so you both know for the future.

Put it in a jar with just water? It’s pretty big I’m unsure if it all will fit in a singular jar? I also read these don’t like to be overwatered? I’m confused 😩

Maybe a bucket? It’s just to coax it back enough to get it back into a pot. I’m doing the same with a calathea and it’s coming along well. This is why I suggested it. But no guarantees. Good luck! 😊

it’s not being overwatered if it’s IN water: this is called hydroponics, and it’s a great way to bring plants back to life. they don’t like to be watered a lot in soil because they don’t absorb it and instead bacteria and fungus in the soil absorbs it and uses it to start feeding on the plant, aka rot. if it’s just in water (with CLEAN roots), then it will not have this problem and will just use as much water as it needs. the water needs to be changed weekly to avoid algae growth.

Yes hydroponics! This was my first time attempting to bring a plant back this way and it worked beautifully. The old girl was down to nothing but one scraggly leaf. Now she’s back in a pot! It took a while but houseplant care is all about patience, isn’t it? 😊 Good luck Katey! Keep us posted. I’d love to see your plant return to all its glory!

What should you do? Get a new boyfriend, apparently. 😂

Lol, I didn’t think it was a smart idea but in his defense he is a farmer and that’s how they allow regrowth in the fields / woods.

It really only caught the dead leaves on fire, it was out in like 2 seconds and there is still green not a ton but a little!

#### Sadamber antwoordde op 2023-07-26

Glad to hear he is a farmer and not some random pyromaniac 🤣

#### Katey antwoordde op 2023-07-26

LMAO no, not a pyro 😂

Okay, in that context, it makes some sense. But I’m not sure that encourages regrowth of the plants they burn or makes the land more fertile for new crops.

Aha that’s where the idea came from! I understand it’s use in farming, not so much with houseplants. Poor guy probably feels terrible.

Putting it in water is great bc overwatering happens when oxygen can’t reach the roots, not when it is too wet. So keeping it in water allows good oxygen flow, which means no rotting.

Also, you should wash the soil from the roots completely before putting it in water, if that wasn’t implied :)

I’m sorry this is your first plant. You should get a rewarding plant to give you self confidence while you work on this one. Find one that is easy care like an ivy, spider plants, arrowhead, tradescantia (inch plant), cacti, succulents and oxalis (blooms every single day!) All can be purchased small in 4 inch pots.

#### anneliese antwoordde op 2023-07-27

idk about an ivy… i know a lot of people who have bad experiences. a pothos is a good idea, if that’s what you meant, but that’s not what people find if they go to the store and ask for ivy. only “devils ivy” is a pothos :)

It was just a suggestion to help you have a better experience owning a plant. Find a plant you like. Use the Planta app to search a low maintenance one. I was referring to pothos ivy (epipremnum). Good luck.
