hi everyone! so I was gifted an avocado tree that was grown from the pit and potted and it was doing very well until a couple weeks ago. I noticed the leaves started browning a bit so I cut some off (I now know this was a mistake 🤦🏽‍♀️) and in the following weeks the stem began to turn black at the base, and then the top. I got advice from a gardener I know who recommended I trim the stem as I had a second stem sprouting from the pit, in the hopes that one would flourish. it’s been about a week since I did this and the baby stem isn’t showing much progress, wondering if anyone has advice about this specific issue or avocado plants in general? I literally cried when this started happening as I genuinely love this tree and I’m not sure where I went wrong. I water when the soil begins to not feel moist and because I don’t have much natural light I purchased a plant light.

I’d pull it out of the soil and check the roots for rot. Actually, I’d just go get another ripe avocado and try again. 😊

it definitely rotted, it may have been rootbound as avocado roots grow quickly. you need lots of light but avocados can handle some dryness it’s better to dry out slightly than to overwater.

I’ve had the same problem several times, very sad for your loss but kinda glad I’m not the only one who keeps having these issues
